best-selling drones summer 2022

August’s best-selling drones, according to B&H Photo

What are the best-selling drones of August 2022? The folks over at B&H Photo, a New York-based online photo retailer, shared some sales data with The Drone Girl, giving folks a glimpse at what drones people actually buy.

B&H’s data then generated a list of the top 10 best-selling drones, or any other drone accessory filed under B&H’s Drones & Aerial Imaging section of its shop. That includes camera drones, racing drones, beginner drones, plus other parts and accessories like batteries, FPV goggles, replacement parts and other miscellaneous accessories.

The data specifically looks at sales of drones and accessories, during the week of August 15. That’s the week before DJI launched its all-new Avata, a CineWhoop-style FPV drone. Keep in mind that the week-long time period provides more of a snapshot, but is also a more limited sample size than, say, a year. That makes it more likely that a few outliers might skew the data (and B&H did not share exact sales counts).

That said, the results are especially interesting for one big reason: nine out of the 10 items on B&H’s Top 10 list of best-selling drones and accessories comes from DJI. That’s in spite of the fact that DJI sells products by plenty of other brands, including Parrot, Yuneec, Blacksheep, Sony and more. The lone, non-DJI drone on the list comes from Autel, which is largely seen as the closest competitor to DJI.

So with that, here were B&H’s best-selling drones and accessories in August 2022:

Neutral Density Filter Set for Mini 3 Pro (3-Pack, ND16/64/256)Filter$55
Mini 3 Pro with DJI RC Remote & Fly More Kit PlusDrone$1,158
Intelligent Flight Battery for Mini 3 ProBattery/Charger$65
Intelligent Flight Battery Plus for Mini 3 ProBattery/Charger$95
30W USB Type-C ChargerBattery/Charger$19
Two-Way Charging Hub for Mini 3 Pro BatteriesBattery/Charger$49
Mini 3 Pro with DJI RC RemoteDrone$909
EVO Nano+ Drone (Premium, Autel Orange)Drone$879
Mavic 3 Cine Premium ComboDrone$4,999
Mini 3 ProDrone$669

This data provides some interesting nuggets of insight:

Accessories sell well: The top-selling item is actually an accessory. This suggests that people are still looking for items to buy, and they’re continuously seeking ways to upgrade their gear. A Neutral-Density Filter, or ND filter, is a great way to do that. These accessories pop on your camera and reduce the amount of light that enter the lens, which is excellent when filming in bright sunlight or for scenarios like taking a long-exposure shot during the day.

B&H’s best-selling drone this month is the DJI Mini 3 Pro. More specifically, it’s the version with the with DJI RC Remote & Fly More Kit Plus.

Mini 3 Pro is the top-selling drone: Mini 3 Pro actually shows up in three different iterations on this list. Because it’s sold in a few different combos based around what accessories and add-ons you want, it might actually be B&H’s top-selling drone, if all were grouped together.

Though, breaking out the Mini 3 Pro by combo kit does provide unique insight, as well. The complete kit is the best-selling, meaning people are willing to pay more if it means they get the RC Remote and other items that are included in the Fly More Kit Plus, like spare batteries, in one bundle.

Though still a best-seller, the “least-best-selling” version of the Mini 3 Pro was the standalone drone, which you can buy for less than $700. DJI did customers a solid by letting them recycle their old controllers and buy the drone, sans controller at a lower cost. But considering that the version of the Mini 3 Pro that comes with a controller sells better, this suggests that either people completely new to DJI (or people who haven’t upgraded their DJI gear in a while) are the ones mostly buying it, as opposed to people who have the latest models of drones constantly upgrading.

The second-best selling drone of this summer on B&H Photo is the DJI Mavic 3 Cine Premium Combo.

The next-best selling drone is DJI’s fanciest, small camera drone, the Mavic 3: The Mavic 3 Cine Premium Combo is the only other DJI drone to make the list. Interestingly, it’s the $5,000 Cine Combo, rather than the roughly-$2,000 DJI Mavic 3 drone.

Earlier this month, I compared the DJI Mini 3 Pro vs. Mavic 3, but it was the $2,000 version we analyzed. By and large, the Mini 3 Pro was the winner on every level — and B&H shoppers believe it. The Mini 3 Pro held up incredibly well to the Mavic 3, despite being less than half the cost.

What I did not compare was the upgraded Cine Combo, which takes the Mavic 3 and turns it up about 10 notches thanks to mega upgrades including support for Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422, and Apple ProRes 422 LT encoding. It also has a built-in 1TB SSD.

For serious professional photographers, it seems Mavic 3 is the way to go. But for more casual photographers, vloggers, and travelers, the DJI Mini 3 Pro might have just cannibalized the Mavic 3 by providing a similar experience at a lower price.

The only non-DJI product on B&H’s Top 10 list is the Autel EVO Nano+.

EVO Nano+ Drone is the best-selling, non-DJI drone: It’s hard not to see why this drone is popular, too. The EVO Nano series is an entry-level aerial camera designed for absolute beginners, and it weighs 249 grams, making it a close competitor to the DJI Mini lineup.

Within the Nano series is the Nano and the slightly-upgraded (thus more expensive) Nano+. The primary difference is a better camera (1/1.28-inch CMOS sensor vs. a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor).
