So you have your Part 107 FAA Drone Pilot License, and now want to step up your drone photography game? Or maybe the inverse — you want to make sure you’re already a drone photo pro before taking the next step to running a drone photography business.

Either way, there’s a new online course available to help teach you what you need to know about drone photography. Drone Launch Academy, which initially started as a platform to help students take and pass their FAA knowledge exams, such as the Unmanned Aircraft exam required for the Remote Pilot Certificate (what you need to fly drones commercially), has since expanded its offerings.

This year, Drone Launch Academy launched the Aerial Photo Pro course. The $249 course goes over the entire process of taking the perfect photo, ranging from getting the composition right while you’re flying, to editing it back at home.

Some things you can expect to learn:

  • How the pros frame up shots and the guidelines they use to help them have consistency
  • The secret to cleaning up unsightly objects that mess up your photos (wish that car wasn’t in the parking lot? Done.)
  • How to take photos in low-light that have that “glowing” look
  • Best practice for real estate photography: how high to shoot and what angles you need
  • How to shoot panoramic photos with your drone

You’ll learn how to be more efficient with your money (Which filters aren’t worth it? When do you actually need a polarizer?) You’ll know how to research a location before physically being there, so you don’t waste time going to a location that won’t actually serve you great photos.

The course is taught by award-winning photographer Alex Harris whose work has appeared in HGTV and ESPN. He has also photographed live performances of artists like Pitbull and Benny Bennasi.

And with that, you’ll also get one of the most vital components to being a great photographer: the business education as well.  Aerial Photo Pro teaches you what to charge, who you should/shouldn’t work for, how to get attention, where to promote online, which industries pay the most and which photos are shared the fastest.

What’s interesting is that Drone Launch Academy also offers a no questions asked, 30-day guarantee. If you sign up for the course, go through the material, and don’t think you got your money’s worth, you can contact them within the first 30 days and they will refund your entire purchase. (Drone Launch Academy is also the same company that will pay you if you fail your Part 107 test).

Sounds like a really great course. The price is also terrific. While drones today have great auto modes, they also come with plenty of manual camera settings to really capture great aerial photos and video.

  • I agree with the comment above, although most drones do a good job of basic photography there is so much more potential when using this technology to the fullest. The two before and after images you have used illustrate this point perfectly. For flight training you can’t beat the real life experience, but for photography an online course is perfect – and a great discount to boot! Nice one.

Real life experience is the key, but formal training can make a huge difference if its good training and showing you all the right things to do. Good article this with sound advice.
