FAQs

If you have a question for Sally French, The Drone Girl, please contact us here and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible. With that, here are Drone Girl FAQs:

I have a story idea I want to pitch to you! How can I do that?

Please email me at the email address posted on my contact page. Note that I get more pitches than I have time to write, so I thank you for your patience.

Wondering how to catch my attention with a great pitch? I put together an entirely video guide on how to pitch your drone product or business to press, like me.

The quick version? Catch my attention with a great headline that I’d click on amidst a sea of others. Answer a commonly-asked (but little-known) question. Tell my something I don’t know, something controversial, or something relevant to other topics in the news today.

Where are you based?

San Francisco

Will you fly a drone to photograph my event?

No, sorry. While I do have a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, I don’t fly commercially!

Can my company sponsor your site?

If your brand aligns with The Drone Girl, then maybe! We’re always looking for sponsors that align with our Drones for Good mentality. If you’re interested in sponsored content, ads, etc. please reach out to my business manager via our contact form.

Can you speak at my event/class/conference?

Potentially! I love getting to meet the community and fans. Please email me through my contact page with the details. While there are more drone events out there that I’d love to attend than I have time for, I’d love to work with you to make it happen.

I want advice for my business. Can you help?

Yes, my 10+ years of experience following the drone industry might be useful in growing your business. I have experience talking to investors, entrepreneurs, founders about where the industry has been and where it’s headed. If you’re interested in my insights, you can book an appointment with me on Intro.

How do you make money?

There’s not a ton of money in writing, and this is more of a hobby/passion project for me than anything! I work a full time job as a content creator for NerdWallet (plus an additional part time job teaching fitness at Equinox) to actually pay my bills!

This website demands hefty web hosting fees, and I also pay two staff members to work part-time for me, both to keep this website running technically, and to ensure content is up-to-date (and there’s new content every day).

To fund those things, I do have a few revenue streams, which — for full transparency — are:

Thanks to your support, including booking me on Intro, shopping through my affiliate partners and even donating, I have largely been able to cover my web hosting fees as well as pay two part-time employees without any out-of-pocket expenses of my own.

I want to buy a drone! Which should I get!

If you want a camera drone, check out my guide to the best drones for photographers. For all other drones (and drone-adjacent products like Part 107 classes, toy drones or other drone gifts), check out my drone buying guide.

Please purchase through the links on my website, as that helps me make money and keep this site running! Thank you in advance!

Do you get free stuff, like free drones?

No. Sometimes companies including DJI will send sample units for review, which is largely done so the review can be posted online on the same day (or even before) the drone even goes on sale to the public. Sample units are returned.

How did you get into drones?

I was a student at the University of Missouri and needed one more credit to graduate. My last semester the school offered a “drone journalism” course. I had no idea what a drone was at the time, but I signed up and was instantly hooked. While the course ended, I wanted to continue learning about drones, which is why I created Drone Girl.

Is there a Drone Girl newsletter?

Yes! I send out a daily newsletter (well, every weekday) with the top drone news you need that day (and sometimes deals, too!). To subscribe, enter your email in the gold box on the right side that says “subscribe to daily email updates from The Drone Girl.”
