Law-Tech Connect Workshop

There’s a drone event about the law — and everyone who cares about drones should listen up

“The minute you read something that you can’t understand, you can almost be sure that it was drawn up by a lawyer,” said the famous vaudeville performer Will Rogers. But here’s an event for lawyers that could be equally compelling (and certainly easy to understand) for any drone pilot: the 2023 Law-Tech Connect Workshop.

The 2023 Law-Tech Connect Workshop is the second consecutive year of the event, which debuted in April 2022 as part of the massive AUVSI XPONENTIAL ’22 conference in Orlando, Florida.

The latest edition of the 2023 Law-Tech Connect Workshop is set for Monday, May 8. Once again, it’ll be held in tandem with the annual AUVSI XPONENTIAL, which this year is being held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

Perhaps unsurprising given the name, but this event is especially-suited for lawyers or other people who work on the legal side of drones. Organizers anticipate that the workshop will qualify as an accredited Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program for attorneys. That means attendees will likely net eight Colorado CLE credits, which are self-certifiable and transferable to other jurisdictions.

But even if you’re not officially an attorney, this one-day workshop might be worth making room for amidst the many other events that go on during AUVSI. Among the topics set to be covered include updates in the laws surrounding multidomain uncrewed commercial and military operations, AAM infrastructure, counter-drone, public-private partnerships, intellectual property and privacy. Check out the full 2023 Law-Tech Connect agenda here.

And among the speakers (see the full 2023 Law-Tech Connect speaker list here) are:

Dawn Zoldi and USN JAG CDR Tracy Reynolds, who will speak again on maritime panel in 2023.
  •  Federal Aviation Administration’s “Drone Guy” Kevin Morris
  • Vic Moss, of the Drone Service Provider’s Alliance
  • Maj Gen (USAF Ret.) James Poss
  • Cameron Chell, CEO of Draganfly
  • Lori DeMatteis, CRO of MatrixSpace

Early-bird registration is open now for $249, which includes:

  • Meals during the day of the event
  • 3-day XPO Hall pass ($100+ value)
  • Pre-event networking event on Sunday, May 7

Though to enable diverse attendance that includes academic faculty, students and industry leaders, there’s a Scholars Program available, too.

The whole event is coordinated by Colorado-based P3 Tech Consulting, which is a veteran- and woman-owned business led by Dawn Zoldi (Colonel, USAF Retired), a licensed attorney and globally renowned industry expert who dedicated 28 years of service to the U.S. Air Force as a Judge Advocate, Associate General Counsel and U.S. Air Force Academy leader. Zoldi’s voice can also be heard all over the Internet talking all things drones and tech. She hosts the Dawn of Drones podcast, and she co-hosts two more: the Full Crew and Full TILT podcasts.

The 2023 Law-Tech Connect Workshop takes place on May 8, which is one day ahead of the official start of AUVSI, which is set for May 9-11, 2023. However, May 8 offers up a few educational workshops to chose from as well. If you arrive to AUVSI early but don’t participate in the 2023 Law-Tech Connect Workshop, you might also consider attending other early workshops, including one on implementing Remote ID and another on communicated autonomous systems.
