If you have a Skydio 2 or Skydio 2+ drone, you could win part of a $10,000 cash prize, simply for taking videos with it (which you’re likely doing all the time as a proud Skydio 2 drone owner anyway). The California drone maker this month is hosting what’s dubbed the SkydioKeyFrame Challenge. Take a video using the company’s new KeyFrame mode, and you could win money.
Entering the SkydioKeyFrame Challenge is simple — just follow these steps:
- Post any video (between 10-60 seconds in length) using KeyFrame mode to Instagram via a public account.
- Follow @SkydioHQ from that account.
- Tag #SkydioKeyFrame on your post.
- Post by 11:59 p.m. PT on April 25, 2022.
Once entries are in, Skydio will narrow it down to a series of finalists, selected via judging criteria including creativity, camera motion, presentation and image quality. For the final winners, things get spicy. Skydio is leaving it up to a community vote, which begins on May 2. Winners will be announced the following week.
What do the SkydioKeyFrame Challenge winners get?
You’ll get money — a total of $6,000 for the winner, and a total prize pool of $10,000 up for grabs. All three podium placers also get a brand-new Skydio 2+ Starter Kit, which is valued at $1,099. Either keep it for yourself to maintain a spare, or gift it to a lucky, Skydio-less dronie in your life. Here’s the prize breakdown:
- 1st Place: Skydio 2+ Starter Kit & $6,000 Cash
- 2nd Place: Skydio 2+ Starter Kit & $3,000 Cash
- 3rd Place: Skydio 2+ Starter Kit & $1,000 Cash
What is Skydio KeyFrame?
Skydio launched its new videography mode called KeyFrame at the beginning of 2022. With it, drone pilots can more accurately plan their shows by designating keyframe points, upon which the drone autonomously maps a route for it to follow and grab the shot. Once those KeyFrames are set, you can play it back, forward or backwards, as frequently as you choose, while also being able to adjust the speed to your preference using the speed slight (and you can also change the speed midway through the flight path). It’s an AI feature that is se to replace the formerly complicated setup of cranes, jibs and large production crews.
Skydio’s new KeyFrame feature was released in early 2022 alongside its new Skydio 2+ drone, which offers longer wireless range and battery life. But even if you have the older model, the Skydio 2, you can still use KeyFrame thanks to a simple download.
Thinking about investing in your own Skydio drone? After all, you’ll need one to enter in the SkydioKeyFrame Challenge. Read my review of the Skydio 2 drone here.
