Sony Airpeak S1 drone now available for pre-order
The highly anticipated Sony Airpeak S1 drone is now available for pre-order, and it is set to ship soon.
The Sony Airpeak drone targets professional photography and video production, and is capable of carrying the company’s Alpha mirrorless cameras. In fact, the S1 is the world’s smallest drone that can be equipped with a full-size mirrorless interchangeable-lens Alpha camera.
And you have tons of possibilities in terms of what actual Alpha camera you use. Among the camera bodies it is compatible with are:
- Alpha 7S series and FX3 for high descriptive capability with suppressed noise
- Alpha 7R series for ultra-high definition
- Alpha 9 series for distortion-free images
- Alpha 1 for shooting footage in 8K
The Sony Airpeak S1 drone first came into the spotlight when it was teased at this year’s virtual CES 2021. It particularly impressed professional cinematographers and videographers, who immediately latched onto the Sony Alpha line as soon as it was introduced in 2006.
And the drone is proving to also be appealing to enterprise users looking to avoid purchasing DJI drones, which has an overwhelming market share but has also been at the center of anti-China concerns.
Sony’s drone can hit maximum speeds of 55mph and has a maximum wind resistance of an impressive 44.7mph. Five Sony image sensors located on the front, back, left, right, and bottom of the drone enable the drone to perform automatic deceleration and obstacle braking.

Of course, theSony Airpeak S1 drone is not cheap. It costs $8,999 — a price tag that entails the drone, plus spare propellers, the remote controller, two batteries and a charger. But you’ll also expect to pay more than that.
That’s because you’ll likely also need a gimbal. The recommended Sony Gremsy Gimbal T3 (which is also available for pre-order now) will cost you $2,199.99.
You’re already past $11,000 at that point, and that doesn’t even include the camera (which can easily run many thousands of dollars as well). You might also opt to add the $250 dual battery charger or the $230 spare battery.
